Oh so long overdue for an update. She’s now 14lbs 13oz, squarely in the 25th percentile, holding steady. She’s eating her rice cereal and peas with gusto, and her poops now smell with gusto to match. And she’s rolling! Put her down on her back in one corner, and within a few minutes she’s rolled herself over to another corner, having gnawed on everything she could get her hands on inbetween. Still happily amused by just about anything her older sister does, and still willing to be content and quiet as long as she’s not tired or hungry. Sleeping better at night, but still waking up several times to nurse. Elaina continues to be the happy and (relatively) chubby baby of the family :)

She wanted to go on the merry-go-round All By Herself today. She rode the big tiger, and waved and smiled at me every time she went around.

Ok, ok, so she’s still in diapers (don’t get me started on the potty training thing), and she still needs help with buttons and zippers, but here are some other things she can do all by herself:

- put her shoes on the correct feet, and buckle them
- put her jacket on (by inserting her arms and putting it over her head — fun to watch!)
- put her pants on, with the tag in the back
- climb up into her carseat, and fasten the top buckle
- rinse her sister’s binkies in the sink
- entertains her sister by endlessly singing her ABCs
- lots of other things I can’t think of right now

The other day she said, “it’s froggy out today. But I don’t see any frogs?”

She wants to add something to the post:

Road trip to LaLa Land! Thanks, Zara, Mars, Hanna and Adam for hosting us, and Crazy Aunt Lulu, Rachel, Paul, and Zoui, and Gretta and Katie for all the fun. Small daytrip to San Diego to introduce Elaina to Great-grandfather Captain Arentzen.

We were picking up the girls after a night of babysitting at Grandma and Grandpa’s house. I’m changing Elaina’s diaper, when I realize that it is on backwards. Grandpa is blamed for this, so I tell him, “the picture is on the front of the diaper.” and hold up the new diaper to show him. “See, Winnie the Pooh.”

Grandpa says, “I don’t understand why the Pooh is on the front.”

“you go hide in the closet and I watch you hide then I count to one and come find you. Close the door so I can’t see you. One, two, three, six! Here I come or not!”

Day 1: Left San Leandro at 10:30, with the car packed full and two happy kids. Drove out to I5, and after a lunch stop near the Olive Pit, made it Lake Selmac Resort in Oregon by 7pm. Set up camp next to Geoff and Jack (14) and Helen (12), Jonathan’s friends from Portland. Long day of driving, about 7 hours.

Day 2: Lazy morning at camp with a yummy breakfast, then piled in the cars by 11am. Drove about 1/2 hour to Oregon Caves National Monument. Jonathan, Geoff, Jack, and Helen enjoyed the 1.5 hour tour, while Rebecca, Mira, and Elaina did their best at the Junior Ranger activity book in the visitor’s center. All gathered together again for lunch, then back to the campsite by 4pm. Temperature peaked at 107ยบ so it was time for a swim in Lake Selmac. Then dinner and games (wearing shorts and t-shirts) until 10:30pm.

Day 3: Packed up camp and on the road by 10am, with a stop at the boardwalk at Eight Dollar Mountain. Then back on the road, headed south, by noon. Another long day, this time about 8 hours of driving down 101. By 8pm we finally met up with Dick and Joanne at Benmore Valley Ranch, a secluded vacation rental halfway between Hopland and Lakeport.

Day 4: Exploring our little slice of heaven. 800 acres all to ourselves. We saw deer, jackrabbits, turkeys, quail, lizards, snakes, coyotes (heard only). Swimming in the warm lake, hiking, Jonathan’s fabulous beouf bourgiugnon for dinner, followed by soaking in the hot tub under the milky way.

Day 5: Steel cut oatmeal for breakfast, then Grandpa and Mira headed to the pond to catch a “whopper.” Everybody took turns canoeing, then back to the cottage for lunch. Some more swimming and sunning at the lake, then packing up and heading home. Stopped at Saigon II for pho for dinner, then finally home to bed.

While in the car:
Mira: “Mommy, I’m tired”
Mommy: “Why don’t you close your eyes and take a nap?”
Mira: “But I want to open my eyes and take a nap!”

Mira: “Mommy, what are we going to do?”
Mommy: “We’re going grocery shopping”
Mira: “What are we going to do grocery shopping?”
Mommy: “We’re going to buy food”
Mira: “What are we going to do with food?
Mommy: “We’re going to eat it”
Mira: “What are we going to do with eat it?”
Mommy: “…”

Five days of family, friends, and sizzling hot weather
